How does a group rate work for resort hotels?

I have never done this before and would like some more information on what normally happens.

I am thinking about getting a group of friend together for a weekend vacation but of course everyone has to pay for their own rooms.

Do I call up the hotel and tell him what I plan on doing to get a better rate?

Or would I just tell everyone I know..Hey this is where I'll be ..figure out how to book your own rooms?

Anyone done a group weekend where everyone meets up before? How does a group rate work for resort hotels?
hey i tried doing that one time, its kind of like the puppy thing, everyone wants one until its time to get it, same way with friends getting together, every one is gung ho untill its time to rock and roll, then u get left with the mess, making u look like an idiot, its every man for himself is the way i go at it anymore, good luck dollHow does a group rate work for resort hotels?
For starters, you need to estimate how many rooms your group will need. Then, go online and look up the hotel/resort and see what the rates are. Then, call the hotel directly and speak with someone to reserve a block of rooms (tell them about how many you anticipate needing) and try to negotiate a price that is lower than the advertised. Usually you will need to pre-arrange a ';check in by... time'; so that if any friends don't show up, the rooms can be released for other guests. The good thing about this is that the block of rooms are usually situated in one area, thus you'll be close to those you are vacationing with. Hope this helped!
when i did, they were called bachelor parties!! :))

but seriously for JUST a second. if u go to the hotel with a confirmed number of guests and book them in a block, say the 5th floor, they can give u a discounted price. its pretty much what priceline or expedia do, tell the hotel, 'well fill ur rooms for a lower fee and our site visitors will pay less.' be careful though. if u do it urself, there may not be refunds if people back out. this raises the total rate per person that does come. the hotel will for example, want $1000 for 10 rooms for 3 nights. if u dont use them all cuz people back out, they may lock in the $1000 fee for the time u reserved! whew!! that was a long answer!! have fun! :))
Just have the hotel block out a wing of rooms, the rate will be very competitive and save everyone money. While your at it, please book Angie and myself, room next to yours, with connecting doors would be great, wink, wink.
